Cervical cancer vaccine : an important advance in the battle against cervical cancer

Cervical cancer vaccine helps protect from sexually transmitted cancer. The HPV vaccine prevents most genital warts and 70%of cervical cancer cases.

The cervical cancer vaccine does not protect against existing HPV infections but will protect against future infections, so it is more efficient to get it before becoming sexually active.

Cervical cancer vaccine: effective and safe

Cervical cancer vaccine has been extremely effective. It appears to be 100% effective in protecting against the HPV-16 and HPV-18 strains. It also seems extremely safe.

Cervical cancer vaccine may help guard against diseases caused by HPV Types 16 and 18, which cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and HPV Types 6 and 11, which cause 90% of genital warts cases.
To be effective, the cervical cancer vaccine must be administered before exposure to HPV has occurred; for example, to adolescents before the start of sexual activities.

The cervical cancer vaccine provides a real protection against the two most common types of HPV (types 16 & 18) which cause about 2 of every 3 cases of cervical cancer. However, it will not protect you against all HPV types, even if you have been vaccinated. Therefore Pap smear test is always needed. Together, screening and vaccination offer the greatest protection from cervical cancer.
