What is the role of the cervical cancer vaccination?

Cervical cancer vaccination triggers the formation of antibodies. As a result, the immune system is strenghtened, and can therefore protect the body from diseases as well as from human papillomaviruses (HPV), which are the major cause of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer vaccination : prevention against HPV

The currently available cervical cancer vaccination prevents infection with HPV types 16, 18, 6 and 11. HPV 16 and 18 are responsible for the majority (70% internationally; 80% in Australia ) of cervical cancers. HPV 6 and 11 are responsible for 90% of genital warts.

Having the cervical cancer vaccination will protect those who have never been exposed to these types of HPV.
