Is the cervical cancer prevention possible?
Cervical cancer prevention can be possible by avoiding exposure to HPV. In fact, experts recommend the following measures:
- Avoiding smoking: smoking enhances the development of abnormal cells and contributes in the development of cervical precancer and cancer
- Avoiding anything that weakens the immune system, such as HIV infection
The issue is that HPV rarely shows symptoms, therefore a person may have the virus and pass it on without knowing it.
Vaccines : are they the cervical cancer prevention solution ?
Developed to protect women from HPV, these vaccines can only be used to prevent HPV infection. They cannot be used to treat an existing infection: they are just a cervical cancer prevention tool. To be most effective, the HPV vaccine should be given before a person becomes sexually active.
It is important to realize that the vaccine doesn't protect from all cancer-causing types of HPV, so routine Pap tests are still necessary.
