The Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

Cervical cancer is unique in that we already know exactly what we have to do to prevent almost every case; effective screening and vaccination programmes could virtually eliminate cervical cancer in Europe. However, two issues stand in the way of this becoming a reality:

  • the vast majority of women in Europe still know little about cervical cancer or what they can do to prevent it,
  • many countries in Europe have ineffective cervical cancer prevention programmes or no programmes at all.

The ECCA therefore launched the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week in 2007 to raise awareness of cervical cancer and how it can be prevented among:

  • the women of Europe so they will learn what they need to do to avoid this disease and access the services where they are available,
  • the politicians and public health officials of Europe so they understand the benefits of prevention programmes and prioritise their implementation where they are not available.
