The Pearl of Wisdom Cervical Cancer Prevention Awards 2009

The Pearl of Wisdom Awards are given to recognise the people and organisations that have made exceptional efforts to prevent cervical cancer in their communities. The awards for January 2009 were given at the Cervical Cancer Summit Meeting in the European Parliament and they were presented to:

The People of Croatia

Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor with Prof Goran Grubisic, Dr. Vesna Elveđi - Gašparović, Dr Martina Diminić-Smetiško, Mrs Marinka Akrap, Dr Magdalena Grce and Prof Ante Corusic receive the award that was given to the People of Croatia for their incredible efforts in hosting one of the most successful Cervical Cancer Prevention Weeks of any European country in January of 2008. The range of actions and the amount of awareness generated were phenomenal and the number of signatures collected for the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition was one of the best in Europe.

The People of Portugal

The Secretary of State for Portugal, Dr Manuel Pizarro, with the Portuguese delegation receive the award that was given to the People of Portugal for their fantastic efforts in mounting a highly successful Cervical Cancer Prevention Week in January 2008. There were numerous actions undertaken across Portugal that made an enormous impact on raising awareness of cervical cancer prevention. In addition, one of the outstanding achievements of the week was the success of the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition which had exceeded 100,000 signatures by the end of the Prevention Week 2008.

The Tbilisi Cervical Cancer Screening Programme

Mr Georg Tsereteli MP, Deputy Chair of the Georgian Parliament together with Dr Otar Toidze MP, Dr Dina Kurdiani, Dr Nino Cheishvili, Prof Rema Gvamichava, Mr Mamuka Katsarava, Prof George Gabunia, Tbilisi Cancer Centre and Dr Tamar Khomasuridze receive the award given to the Tbilisi Cervical Cancer Screening Programme and the people who were instrumental in planning the programme, campaigning to raise the necessary funding, supporting it within the different levels of government and all those who worked to establish and run the programme.

The Alentejo Cervical Cancer Screening Programme

Dr Luis Gonçalves, Coordinator of the Alentejo Cervical Cancer Screening, Programme, Dr Rosa Matos, President of the Regional Health Administration of Alentejo and Dr Maria da Conceição Margalha, Director of the Regional Health Administration of Alentejo receive the award given to the the Alentejo Cervical Cancer Screening Programme (Portugal) that was launched in January of 2008.  The award recognised the efforts of everyone involved, from those who could see the importance of this programme to the health of women in their region, to the people who painstakingly planned the programme, fought to make it a priority for the different levels of government so that resources would be made available and who then worked hard to implement it.

The Serbian National Cervical Cancer Screening Programme

Dr Snezana Pantic-Aksentijevic, Serbian Ministry of Health and Prof Dr Vesna Kesic, Advisor to the Serbian Minister of Health for Prevention and Early Detection of Cervical Cancer receive the award given to the Serbian National Cervical Cancer Screening Programme and the people who were involved in the establishment the programme. The Serbian cervical cancer screening programme is an excellent example of what can be achieved when people put their hearts and minds into a project.

The Estonian National Cervical Cancer Screening Programme

Mrs Maie Egipt, Executive Director of the Estonian Cancer Society, Mrs Heljo Pikhof, Member of the Estonian Parliament and Dr Terje Raud Project Manager of Estonian Cervical Cancer Screening Programme received the award given to the Estonian National Cervical Cancer Screening Programme and all the people who worked to implement this programme. Estonia is one of the few countries that are now in the process of implementing a nationwide organised cervical cancer screening programme.  This award recognised all of the dedicated individuals who realised the problem and worked hard to put in place all of the relevant components of the programme.

The Wolfsberg HPV Screening Programme

Prof Dr K.U. Petry, Chefarzt der Frauenklinik at the Klinikum der Stadt Wolfsburg, and Mrs. Lydia Kruger from the Deutsche BKK together accepted the award given to the Wolfsberg (Germany) HPV Screening Programme which has made a valuable contribution to cervical cancer prevention as it has moved forward with the latest technological advances in HPV testing, and demonstrated the efficacy of this approach. The programme was the brainchild of Prof K.U Petry who had to overcome much resistance to implement it, requiring much professional courage to be one of the first in the field to do this.

Mrs Imelda Read

Mrs Imelda Read, President of the European Cervical Cancer Association 2004-2008, received the Pearl of Wisdom Cervical Cancer Prevention award for her services towards the prevention of cervical cancer during her time as President of the ECCA.
