The 6th Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 21 - 28 January 2012

Bosnia & Herzegovina:

  • A press briefing session will be held in the Clinical Centre of Banja Luka on 20 January to inform journalists about cervical cancer prevention in the country and the objectives of the CCPW 2012
  • Promote the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition through email and facebook campaigns
  • Promote the Pearl of Wisdom as the symbol of the cervical cancer prevention campaign through the distribution of real and virtual Pearls of Wisdom, distribution of the Pearl of Wisdom poster and placement of the Pearl logo on the websites of the members and related organisations
  • A number of lectures for health professionals will be held in the clinical facilities in Banja Luca, Mostar and Tuzla.
  • A symposium on HPV infection will be held in Sarajevo on 16 January with a range of well-known speakers from the region including Prof Mario Poljac.
  • Launch of cervical cancer screening services for the Roma settlements in the region.  

Bulgaria:

The Bulgarian ECCA Members (Bulgarian Association of Onco-Gynaecologists, National Cancer Registry and Bulgarian Health Psychology Research Centre) will:

  • Hold workshops for healthcare professionals in Sofia, Varna and Plovdiv.
  • Distribute Pearl of Wisdom pins to officials in the Bulgarian Parliament, Ministry of Health, the national hospitals network and to the media representatives. 
  • Hold ‘Health Day’ workshops in Sofia University and Plovdiv University to promote awareness about cervical cancer prevention among the students.
  • The Bulgarian Parliamentary Healthcare Committee will hold its annual experts roundtable meeting on cervical cancer prevention in the Bulgarian Parliament.  

Croatia: 

The Croatian ECCA Members (Cybermed, Croatian National Institute of Public Health, Ruđer Bošković Institute, Medix Medical Journal and Croatian National Advisory Board for Cervical Cancer Prevention) will:

  • Hold a press briefing in the Ruđer Bošković Institute on 20 January to inform journalists about cervical cancer prevention the objectives of the CCPW 2012.
  • Hold a seminar for healthcare professionals on 22 January in the Sisters of Mercy Hospital to review modern methods for cervical cancer prevention by screening and HPV vaccination.
  • Hold a round table discussion for politicians and health professionals to review the implementation of the National Program for Early Detection of Cervical Cancer that was started in 2010 by the Croatian Ministry of Health.
  • Launch the English edition of the book “They Call Us Babies” by Prof Julijana Matanović and Dr Anka Dorić on cervical cancer.
  • Hold public seminar on cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination.
  • Distribute Pearl of Wisdom pins to officials in the Croatian Parliament and Ministry of Health.

Czech Republic:

The Czech ECCA Members (Czech Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, Charles University, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and the League Against Cancer Prague) will:

  • Organise the information campaign for the general public that will include the participation of cancer survivors and patients together with their family members.
  • Organise the annual public information booth in Wenceslas Square in Prague with the participation of the Czech Ambassadors of the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, the film stars Veronica Nova and Ivana Jirešová.
  • Distribute the ECCA brochures on cervical cancer prevention to the general public.

Estonia:

The Estonian ECCA Members (Estonian Cancer Society and the Estonian National Institute of Health Development) will:

  • Issue a press release and press pack about cervical cancer prevention and the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2012.
  • Display the new edition of the Pearl of Wisdom posters promoting the Estonian National Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Tallinn, Tartu, Parnu, Jarva, etc.
  • Distribute the new cervical cancer and breast cancer screening brochures to national health care institutions across Estonia for onward distribution to the general public.
  • Launch a Facebook campaign to stimulate discussion about cervical cancer prevention.
  • Launch a promotional campaign in magazines targeting the family and women, national newspapers and intranet sites of major Estonian companies and universities.
  • Place articles in journals for family doctors and other medical specialists.
  • Organize number of public lectures for the general public to raise awareness about cervical cancer prevention and to promote participation in the cervical screening programme.
  • Continue the Pearl of Wisdom Campaign with the distribution of Pearl of Wisdom brooches to gynaecologists and family doctors.

France:

La Ligue Contra le Cancer will organise a number of public lectures and information booths to promote cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination in different regions of France.

  • The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the CHU de Nantes will organise an information evening for the general public.
  • The Cancer Screening Committee of Indre and Loire will organise public information booths for the distribution of brochures about cancer screening and HPV vaccination.
  • The Comite Feminin de Maine et Loire will organise a public seminar about cervical cancer prevention in Saumur.
  • Le Crips Ile-de-France and the Cite de la Science et de l’Industrie will organise a public information booth to distribute information on cervical cancer prevention in the Cite de la Sante in Paris.
  • A group of 20 pharmacies in Toulouse will display the Pearl of Wisdom posters and distribute the ECCA cervical cancer brochures together with the Pearl of Wisdom brooches during the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.
  • The Collège National des Gynécologues Obstétriciens Français (CNGOF) will launch an internet campaign to encourage 25-65 year-olds to participate in the national campaign for cervical cancer screening.
  • L’ODLC  Isère will hold information sesions on cervical cancer prevention for the general public in the CPAM facilities at: 2 rue des Alliés  GRENOBLE (24 January, 08.00 to 16.30), 27rue André Maginot GRENOBLE (31 January, 08.00 to 16.30), 1 place Ste Pierre VIENNE (7 February, 08.00 to 16.30)

Georgia:

The Georgian ECCA Members (Georgian Alliance Against Cancer, Georgian Cancer Prevention Center, Georgian National Screening Programme, Georgian Society for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy, Georgian Society of Gynaecological Oncology, Tbilisi Cancer Center, Georgian Women's Center, Georgian Federation of Colposcopy, Georgian Women Doctors Association) will:

  • Issue a press release and press pack about cervical cancer prevention and the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2012,
  • Distribute the Pearl of Wisdom brooches to politicians and media representatives across Georgia,
  • Organise public seminars on cervical cancer screening in Tbilisi, K’ut’aisi, Akhalts’ikhe and Batumi,
  • Organise the distribution of the ECCA’s brochures through the ‘Ici Paris’ stores in Tbilisi, K’ut’aisi and Batumi,
  • The Tbilisi Municipality, National Screening Center, and the Georgian Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology will organise a workshop to review the accessibility of cancer screening services in Georgia and make recommendations for improving access,
  • Georgian Federation of Colposcopy will organise a lectures for the doctors of the Family Medicine Centres,
  • The Georgian Women's Center volunteers will distribute the ECCA educational brochures to the general public in major towns and cities across Georgia,
  • The ECCA brochures will also be translated into the Azeri language for distribution to Azeri minority in the Kvemo-Kartly region.

Medical students from the Georgian State Medical University will:

  • Promote the Pearl of Wisdom and distribute information about cervical cancer in high-traffic public areas such as subway stations, shopping malls, etc.
    Organise a public event in the State Medical University to sign the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition
  • Organise a conference on cervical cancer prevention for students, staff and faculty at the State Medical University. The media will also be invited to this event.

Medical students from the Aieti Medical Institue will:

  • Hold a seminar on cervical cancer prevention at one of Tbilisi’s most famous medical centres

Greece:

The Greek ECCA Members (Hellenic Society for the Research and Treatment of Papilloma Virus, Papageorgiou General Hospital, The Ormylia Foundation) will work with AgaliaZO and the Society of Volunteers Against Cancer, under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, to:

  • Issue a press release to announce the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, its aims and objectives and the results of a national survey of the knowledge and attitudes of the Greek women about cervical cancer prevention, HPV vaccination and HPV testing questionnaires that were completed during last year's campaign.
  • Participate in a number of TV programs that will include a doctor, a person that has been vaccinated with the HPV vaccine, a social worker and a representative of AgaliaZO who will talk about the prevention of cervical cancer.
  • Information leaflets will be distributed in public places across Greece.
  • Advertisements about cervical cancer prevention for TV and radio will be broadcast across Greece from 10 Jan to 10 Feb 2012, and they will also be projected in cinemas across Greece.
  • Open access cervical cancer screening clinics will be held in 10 major hospitals in Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras, Heraklion.
  • A series of lectures for general practitioners and other healthcare professionals will be held in 10 major hospitals in Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras, Heraklion.
  • Organise information booths in shopping centres in Thessaloniki, Larissa, Patras, Heraklion where volunteers will distribute informational brochures and collect signatures for the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition.

Ireland:

  • Regular cervical screening stops cervical cancer before it starts is the simple message from Irish health specialists during European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, which runs between 22nd and 28th of January 2012.
  • During the week, Irish health specialists are encouraging women aged between 25 and 60 to avail of a free smear test from a GP practice or family planning clinic of their choice, through CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme. 
  • The campaign is being promoted by the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) with the support of broadcaster Maura Derrane and CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme.
  • To raise awareness about the disease, the IFPA is distributing 20,000 Pearl of Wisdom campaign badges and information leaflets to women around the country through 200 participating pharmacists, family resource centres, occupational health nurses and other health promotion networks including Irish Cancer Society Daffodil Centres.
  • On Tuesday 24th January, staff from the West Limerick Primary Healthcare Project (PHCP) staff will be interviewed by Sheila O'Regan on West Limerick Community Radio, together with Dr Grainne Flannelly, Clinical Director of CervicalCheck, the Irish National Cervical Screening Programme.
  • During the week, the PHCP team will be visiting eligible women from the Traveller community to promote awareness and uptake of cervical cancer screening, and they will also distribute the Pearl of Wisdom to women in this community.

Italy:

The Italian ECCA Members (Viareggio Regional Health Unit 12, Centre for Cervico-Vaginal Cytology Screening of St. Maria Nuova Hospital of Reggio Emilia, Women's Foundation of Milan, Scientific Institute of Oncological Prevention, Italian National Observatory for Women's Health, Italian Society of Pathologic and Cytopathologic Anatomy, University of Bari, University of Foggia) will:

  • Hold a press conference on 20 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and distribute information about cervical cancer prevention in Italy. 
  • Launch an advertising campaign to promote cervical cancer screening for all women in Italy.
  • Distribute educational materials on cervical cancer screening in high-traffic areas including supermarkets, train stations, etc. in Milano, Lazio, Campania, Emilia Romagna and Lombardia.
  • Distribute educational materials on HPV vaccination in schools and colleges in Milano, Lazio, Campania, Emilia Romagna and Lombardia.
  • Organise a series of educational seminars and workshops for the general public with the distribution of educational materials and the list of national  internet resources on cervical cancer prevention.

Kazakhstan:

The Almaty Cancer Centre will partner with the Kazakh Social Fund ‘Together Against Cancer’ and the Kazakh Institutte of Oncology and Radiology to:  

  • Hold a press conference on 20 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and distribute information about cervical cancer prevention in Kazakhstan.
  • Organise open access cervical cancer screening clinics in all municipal and private clinics in Almaty and Astana.
  • Hold a series of workshops on cervical cancer prevention  for  GPs, midwives and nurses in Astana.
  • Hold a series of seminars on cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination in the Almaty Cancer Hospital for the general public in the Kazakh and Russian languages.

Latvia:

The Latvian ECCA Members (Latvia's Association for Family Planning and Sexual Health, Latvian Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricans) will:  

  • Hold a press conference on 19 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and distribute information about cervical cancer prevention in Latvia.
  • Organise a workshop with the participation of the ECCA members and the Ministry of Health to review the status of cervical cancer screening in Latvia.
  • Establish a working group composed of state and NGO representatives to design methods to increase public participation in the national cervical cancer screening program.
  • Organise a series of workshops on cervical cancer prevention for the general public in Riga.

Lithuania:

The Lithuanian ECCA Members (Lithuanian Family Planning and Sexual Health Association, University of Vilnius, Lithuanian Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS) will work with the Lithuanian Soroptimists to:  

  • Hold a cervical cancer prevention workshop for NGOs, health authorities, medical associations and the media in Vilnius University on 16 January, 2012 for.  The Pearl of Wisdom brooches and ECCA brochures will be distributed to all attendees,
  • Hold a press conference on 20 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and distribute information about cervical cancer prevention in Lithuania,
  • Hold the 6th Cervical Cancer Prevention Congress for healthcare professionals in Kaunas Medical University from 17.00 – 20.00 on 31 January 2012.  The Pearl of Wisdom brooches and ECCA brochures will be distributed to all attendees,
  • Hold the 6th Cervical Cancer Prevention Congress for healthcare professionals and politicians with health responsibilities in Vilnius University from 15.00 – 18.00 on 1 February 2012.  The Pearl of Wisdom brooches and ECCA brochures will be distributed to all attendees,
  • Hold an afternoon/evening cervical cancer prevention seminar for healthcare professionals and politicians with health responsibilities in Vilnius University from 15.00 – 18.00 on 1 February 2012.  The Pearl of Wisdom brooches and ECCA brochures will be distributed to all attendees,
  • Hold a seminar on HPV infection and vaccination for 120 teachers and 50 young people organised by Association of Sexual Health in Lithuania,
  • The ULAC will organise a contest through their website (http://www.ulac.lt/lt) to promote the Pearl of Wisdom as the symbol for the cervical cancer prevention campaign in Lithuania,
  • Hold a meeting for the members of the Lithuanian branch of the Soroptimists International to review and discuss the means by which they can support the prevention of cervical cancer in Lithuania,
  • Distribute the Pearl of Wisdom brooches and the ECCA brochures at the ‘Skiing for Health’ event organised with the City of Vilnius,
  • Hold a special mass for the victims of cervical cancer at the St Jones Church in Vilnius,
  • Organise a public  promotional campaign in the mass media to raise awareness about the importance of cervical cancer prevention.

Macedonia:

The Macedonian ECCA Members (Centre for Regional Policy Research and Cooperation, Association "BORKA - For each new day") will:

  • Hold a press conference on 23 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and distribute information about cervical cancer prevention in Macedonia.
  • Hold a roundtable meeting for Macedonian MPs in the Boris Trajkovski Hall of the Macedonian Parliament at 10.00 on 25 January to review the current situation with cervical cancer in the country with the participation of Dr Philip Davies. The working session will be broadcast on national TV.
  • Ms Biba Dodeva, General Director of the NGO BORKA, and Dr Philip Davies will have a private meeting with Mr Nikola Todorov, the Minister of Health for the Republic of Macedonia.
  • Organise the promotion of the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition.
  • Distribute the ECCA cervical cancer brochures to health centres and medical clinics across Macedonia.

Moldova:

The Moldovan ECCA Members (Moldavian Gynaecologic Oncology Society, Reproductive Health Training Center) will work with the Oncology Institute of Moldova, the UNFPA, the Chisinau Municipal Health Department and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova to:

  • Hold a press conference on 19 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and distribute information about cervical cancer prevention in Moldova.
  • Organize a series of training sessions on cervical cancer prevention for the members of the Moldavian Gynaecologic Oncology Association and the Romanian Society for Oncological Surgery and Gynaecology that will be held in several universities in Chisinau.
  • Distribute the ECCA brochures on cervical cancer in Romanian and Russian to the general public in high-traffic areas of Chisinau.
  • Organise the Ministerial Summit Meeting on the Prevention of Cervical Cancer that will be held in Chisinau on 12-13 March 2012.

Netherlands:

This year, the Dutch Screening Centre for the Mid-Western Region, the Bevolkingsonderzoek Zuid-West, will:

  • Promote cervical cancer screening and the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week through an internet viral campaign with a link to information about the Prevention Week,
  • Participate in the “gongceremonie” at the Amsterdam stock exchange to gain additional publicity for the campaign.

Poland:

The Polish ECCA Members (Polish Gynaecological Society, National Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Poland, Kwiat Kobiecości) will:

  • Hold a press conference on 19 January to announce the launch of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week and promote its objectives for Poland.
  • Organise an internet campaign to promote the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition and Pearl of Wisdom.
  • Organise a telephone hotline that will provide access to consultation with gynaecologists, psychologists, oncologists during the prevention week.
  • Organisation of information booths in the 3 main shopping centres in Warsaw where the volunteers of Kwiat Kobiecosci will distribute educational brochures and the Pearl of Wisdom brooches, and volunteer doctors will be available to answer questions from the general public.
  • The mobile team of Kwiat Kobiecosci volunteers and doctors will hold public information sessions on cervical cancer prevention in  Zielona Góra, Senagalu, Łomży, Gliwic, Katowice, Trójmiasto,and Podkarpackiego.
  • Distribution of cervical cancer informational brochures in state health centres and medical clinics across Poland.

Russia:

The Scientific Centre for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology will again work with the Russian Medical Society to:

  • Organise the annual Cervical Cancer Prevention Workshop for medical professionals that will review the current status of cervical cancer prevention in Russia,
  • Hold a series of congresses on cervical cancer prevention in the cities of Moscow, Krasnodar, Voronezh, Ekaterinburg, Samara and Omsk,
  • Hold a series of ‘open door’ public information seminars in the cities of Moscow, Krasnodar, Voronezh, Ekaterinburg, Samara and Omsk,
  • Disseminate information about cervical cancer prevention to the general public through newspapers, magazines and television,
  • Publish a special edition of the state scientific journal “Medicinskaja gazeta” on cervical cancer prevention in February 2012.

Serbia:

The Serbian ECCA Members (Oncology Institute of Vojvodina, Clinical Center of Serbia) will work with the National Advisory Board for Cervical Cancer Prevention, the Serbian Society for Gynaecologic Oncology, the Serbian Cancer Society and  DECENA to:

  • Organise a series of public lectures that will be held in the regional health centres throughout the country.
  • Distribute the ECCA’s cervical cancer brochures and the Pearl of Wisdom brooches to the general public in high traffic areas of the major Serbian cities. 
  • Launch a promotional campaign to collect signatures for the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition.

Slovenia:

  • University of Ljubljana with the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana will organise a series of seminars for the general public to raise awareness of the cervical cancer screening programme and encourage participation. Signatures for the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition will be collected during the events.

Spain:

The Spanish ECCA Members (Spanish Association Against Cancer AECC, Spanish Association of Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy, Catalan Institute of Oncology) will:

  • Launch the Cervical Cancer Prevention Week with an internet information campaign.
  • Publish a special ‘Cervical Cancer’ edition  of the AECC magazine in January 2012.
  • Promote the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition.
  • Hold a seminar on cervical cancer prevention for the students at the Universities of Barcelona.
  • Organise a series of public information events in major centres in Malaga, Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia.

UK:

Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust will:

  • Hold a comedy night fund raising event in the Leicester Square Theatre on 22 January. The comedy night show will include Shazia Mirza, Helen Lederer, Jackie Clunes, Rosie Wilby, Viv Groskop, Suzy Bennett and Lara King
  • Hold a reception at the House of Commons on 25 January to raise awareness among politicians of the importance of cervical cancer prevention
  • Launch the 2012 edition of their annual promotional campaign with the placement of posters and cards about cervical cancer prevention in cinemas, bars, clubs, motorway stations and shopping malls across England
  • Co-host an event with the NHS Cervical Screening Programme on 26th January looking at challenges to screening uptake amongst Black and Minority Ethnic Communities
  • Announce the results of a UK wide survey look at attitudes, understanding and issues around cervical screening in the 50+ age group.
