The STOP Cervical Cancer Petition

If you have not signed the petition, please do it now: www.CervicalCancerPetition.eu

Launched by the European Cervical Cancer Association (ECCA), the European Cancer Organisation, the Association of European Cancer Leagues and the International Union Against Cancer, the petition is based on the Citizen’s Initiative of the EU Lisbon Treaty which compels the Commission to act if requested to by a petition of 1 million or more European citizens. To date, the petition has been signed by over 620,000 people all calling for the political support needed to eliminate cervical cancer in Europe and this number increases daily.

The important thing to recognise about cervical cancer is that we already know exactly what we need to do to prevent almost every case of this disease. Organised cervical cancer screening programmes have been proven to prevent 80% of cervical cancer deaths and now, new technologies offer the opportunity to improve on this already remarkable potential. And yet, the startling fact is that the majority of European women still do not have access to these programmes.

So how is a petition going to help? While the Lisbon Treaty has not been adopted, a petition with a million signatures still carries moral weight as an indicator of public opinion and it is therefore something that politicians will pay attention to. In addition, a petition with a million signatures is very useful in attracting the interest of the media to this issue so it can be used as a tool to get information about cervical cancer prevention out to the general public and to raise awareness about this important issue.
