The 5th Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 23 - 29 January 2011

Bulgaria:

  • During the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, the Bulgarian Parliamentary Healthcare Committee and the Parliamentary Consensus on Socially Significant Diseases organised the “Confinement of Cervical Cancer in Bulgaria – Challenges and Perspectives” workshop that was held inthe Bulgarian National Assembly on 27 January 2011.
  • Pearl of Wisdom pins were distributed to officials in the Bulgarian Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Fund (APOZ), the National Oncological Hospital, and to journalists and the general public during the Week.
  • The European Cervical Cancer Prevention workshop for healthcare professionals was held in Sofia University where the delegates reviewed modern methods for cervical cancer prevention. 
  • The ‘Health Day’ workshop was held in Sofia University to promote awareness about cervical cancer prevention for the students.
  • A roundtable discussion on cervical cancer prevention was held in the Bulgarian European Information Center with the participation of national and international cervical cancer experts, and national politicians.

Croatia: 

  • A press conference was held on January 20th to announce the 5th European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week Prevention Week and the actions to be held in Croatia.
  • The book about cervical cancer for young women, "One misle da smo male" (They Call Us Babies), written by Prof Juliana Matanovi and Dr Anka Dori, was launched during the prevention week.
  • The song "Moj je  ivot moja pjesma" (My Life, My Song) by Maya Sar (Bosnia & Herzegovina), Nina Badri  (Crotia), Aleksandra Radovi (Srbia) and Karolina Go eva (Macedonia) was launched across Croatia.
  • The ECCA educational materials on cervical cancer prevention were distributed in the main squares of Zagreb, Rijeka and other major cities in Croatia.
  • Free cervical cancer screening examinations with the distribution of the ECCA educational material were offered in the main Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Zagreb.

Cyprus:

  • 5th European Prevention Week on Cervical Cancer was very successful in Cyprus and managed to get good press, radio and TV coverage for the Press Conference which we organised on 25 January 2010. In the Press Conference representatives from Cyprus Gynaecological Society, the Cyprus Paediatrics Society, Cyprus Colposcopy Society, the Cyprus Anticancer Society and Europa Donna Cyprus were participating.
  • On Saturday the 29th there was a live link at The Mall of Cyprus in Nicosia where messages were transmitted through national radio and the visitors had a chance to ask questions and get the informational leaflet while at the same time buying the pearl of wisdom and signing the declaration.
  • An interactive work with general public in the shopping mall was organized on the 29th of January, with live link from a radio station. During this day  information  was provided to the public through announcements and leaflets, general public was adviced by the paediatricians, gynaecologists, colposcopists,
  • Pearl of Wisdom and Stop Cervical Cancer Petition were being prmoted throughout the whole week.

Czech Republic:

  • Press conference was organized on 20th January  by League against cancer.
  • Czech National HPV Reference Laboratory  organized information campaign for blood donors and employees from January 24th till 28th.
  • Information campaign for pediatricianswas ongoing during the prevention week. The doctors received pearls and information leaflets.

Estonia:

  • A nationwide promotional campaignwas running during the week which included television and radio advertisements, a poster campaign displayed in public places, and a TV advertisement encouraging women to take part in the new screening programme that was shown on a number of TV stations including ETV, Kanal 2 and Kanal 11.
  • A number of public lectureswere organised  for the general public about cervical cancer prevention and to promote participation in the screening programme.
  • A number of Estonian Cancer Society HPV brochures were sent to gynaecologists and doctors across Estonia for distribution to the general public.

France:

This year, the ECCA partnered with La Ligue Contre le Cancer Comité de Loire-Atlantique which launched a campaign to raise awareness of cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination. This campaign included a wide variety of actions such as:

  • Information booths were set-up in high-traffic areas, including 2 that were held in local secondary schools on the 24th and 27th of January.
  • A public debate on cervical cancer prevention was held on the evening of the 25th of January at the Faculty of Medecine and Pharmacy at the CHU de Nantes. The opening speech was given by Pr Henri-Jean Philippe, Chef du Service de Gynécologie-Obstétrique du CHU de Nantes, with further presentations given by Dr Jacques Marchetta, Gynécologue, Administrateur de la Société Française de Pathologie du Col Utérin, Dr Michel Bachelet, General Practitioner, Dr Georges Picherot, Chef du Service de Pédiatrie du CHU de Nantes and Frédérique Cheymol, Pharmacist.
  • On the 25th of January, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the CHU de Nantes partnered with the Caisse Primaire d'Assurance Maladie, Cap Santé 44, la Ligue Contre le Cancer and the Société Francaise de Pathologie du Col Utérin, to organise a conference and information evening for the general public that was held on the 25th of January at 19.30 in the Faculty of Medicine at the CHU de Nantes.
  • On the 25th and 27th of January, the Cancer Screening Committee of Indre and Loire organised public information booths in the Centre Hospitalier du Chinonais and the Clinique de l’Alliance in St Cyr sur Loire where brochures were distributed and clinicians were available to answer questions from the general public.
  • On the 27th of January, the Comite Feminin de Maine et Loire organised a public conference on the Prevention of Cervical Cancer in the Salle Jean Rostand in Saumur. Presentations were given by Dr Marchetta, Director of the French Society for Cervical Pathology, Dr Le Duc-Banaszuk, Coordinator of Cervical Cancer Screening Cap Santé 49, Dr Moya, Head of Gynaecology for the Hospital of Saumur and Dr Brossard, General Practitioner, and the topics covered included the role of HPV in cervical carcinogenesis, a review of cervical cancer screening, the treatment of pre-cancerous cervical lesions and HPV vaccination.
  • On the 29th of January, Le Crips Ile-de-France and the Cite de la Science et de l’Industrie organised a public information booth to distribute information on cervical cancer prevention and to answer questions from the general public that was held in the Cite de la Sante in Paris 75019.

Georgia:

  • TV interview in the morning show of the famous Georgian TV of the President of the ECCA together with the Director of the National Screening Center
  • Radio interviews of the European Cervical Cancer Association (ECCA) members – “Alliance Against Cancer” “Gerogian Federation of Colposcopy”  and representative was held on two major radios of Georgia
  • Presentation of the Cervical Cancer guidelines, elaborated by the Georgian Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology together with the UNFPA, with the presence of the President of the ECCA, representatives from the Parliament, Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, oncologists and gynecologists, and representatives from insurance and pharma companies, which were highlighted on all major TV channels of Georgia
  • Distribution of cervical cancer related informational materials in public places (movie theaters, big supermarkets) by young volunteers from the Medical University of “Aieti”
  • Distribution of informational materials and Pearls of Wisdom through the perfumery network “Ici Paris”
  • Demonstration of the Prevention Week banners in the Screening Centers of Tbilisi and popularization of the petition of “Stop Cervical Cancer in Europe”
  • Lectures for the doctors  in the family medicine centers in Tbilisi and other cities by “Georgian Women Doctors’ Association”,”Georgian Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology”, “Alliance Against Cancer” and “Georgian Federation of Colposcopy”
  • Lectures for Medical University “Aieti” students conducted by the members of “Alliance Against Cancer” and “Georgian Federation of Colposcopy”
  • Training of the doctors from the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) group from Abkhazia by “Georgian Federation of Colposcopy”
  • Free medical examinations conducted by the members of “Alliance Against Cancer”, and “Georgian Federation of Colposcopy” for  the persons from the most at risk and IDPs groups
  • Informational seminars among the IDP populations by “Georgian Women’s Center”
  • Electronic campaign on “Stop Cervical Cancer in Europe” petition

Germany:

  • A media relations campaign was  presented with press releases in January .
  • Cervical Cancer Prevention Week in Germany was marked with the presentation of a Pearl of Wisdom Award to the Wolfsburg HPV Screening Programme in recognition of the efforts of Prof K.U. Petry and his colleagues who were responsible for its implementation.
  • A cervical cancer prevention Workshop for gynaecologists was held in Wolfsburg to review modern methods for cervical cancer prevention based on organised cervical screening together with the vaccination.
  • Lectures and seminars were organized for the general public on different aspects of cervical cancer prevention screening and HPV vaccination and were held in Tuebingen, Heidelberg, Mainz and Berlin.

Greece:

  • The Prevention Week in Greece was launched with a press conference in Athens.
  • During the Prevention Week, information booths was placed in key spots in Thessaloniki and used to inform people about cervical cancer prevention with the ECCA leaflets and the Pearl of Wisdom pins distributed and signatures lists collected for the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition.
  • Lectures were held for doctors and health care professionals covering cervical cancer screening, HPV testing and HPV vaccination.

Ireland:

  • All 350 member salons of the Irish Hairdresser Federation were provided with Pearl of Wisdom badges, campaign posters and information leaflets. Salons presened a badge and an information leaflet on cervical screening to every woman who had a hair appointment during the week
  • Media campaign featuring press launch, photo shoot with broadcaster Maura Derrane, press release and media factsheets.
  • Distribution of Pearl of Wisdom Packs through 27 partner organisation including National Women’s Council of Ireland, Irish Women’s Traveller Forum, Irish Country Women’s Association, HSE Health Promotion Unit, LGBT groups and Family Resource Centres. 
  • Dedicated Cervical Cancer Awareness Exhibitions hosted in 13 Family Resource Centres in the western region.
  • Information stands in Tesco in Sligo on January 27th
  • Information mornings: BreastCheck, Galway on 27th of January, Westside Community Development Partnership on 28th January and National Cancer Screening Service, Parnell Street, Dublin.
  • Political advocacy – distribution of Pearl of Wisdom packs to all female politicians
  • Cervical Cancer Prevention Information Session around the country targeting hard-to-reach groups.

Italy:

  • The Prevention Week began with a press conference in Rome.  A forth presentation on HPV vaccination showed the need for further public education to encourage the uptake of vaccination and to improve coverage.
  • Seminars on cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination were organized for the general public in Torino, San Remo and Mantova, which will continue throughout the year. 
  • Educational materials on cervical cancer and HPV vaccination were distributed in colposcopy and cervical smears ambulatories, in schools, colleges, supermarkets, shopping malls and other public spaces in Milano, Lazio, Campania, Emilia Romagna, and Lombardia.Educational seminars were held for students in Ferrara, Susa and Piacenza with the distribution of educational materials and literature.

Kazakhstan:

  • On 24th September 2010, a Conference devoted to prevention and early diagnostics of cervical cancer was held in Almaty – the biggest and most populated city of Kazakhstan. The Conference was organized by the Almaty Cancer Hospital, a non-governmental, non-profitable social fund 'Together Against Cancer' and the Fund of the First President of Kazakhstan. About 250 oncologists, gynecologists-obstetricians, representatives of the RK Ministry of Healthcare, the Parliament of the RK, the World Health Organization and civil society participated in the event.  
  • On 25th September 2010, a Doors Open Day was conducted in all municipal and private clinics of the Almaty city giving an opportunity for every attending woman to pass a free gynecological examination.
  • A press conference was conducted a week earlier in order to raise awareness about cervical cancer among local women and promote the National Cervical Cancer Screening Program.
  • In December 2010, the first Screening Centre was established in Astana – the capital of Kazakhstan.
  • A series of lectures and practical training courses on cervical cancer prevention and early detection were held for medical officers of the general medical network of the city of Astana and Almaty.

Lithuania:

  • An educational conference  Health days  on cervical cancer  prevention was organised by Prof Aurelija Vaitkuviene representative of  Vilnius University ECCA institutional member  Vilnius University in 5-7 December 2010.  In the conference is expecting participation of Minister of Health Mr. R.Sukys and Minister of Education Mr G.Steponavicius and the advisor of the health and education department in the Lithuanian President office and General Director of ECCA Dr Philip Davies. In the conference is expecting about 250 participants from Lithuania, NGOs, health authorities, medical associations and the media.  
  • The Pearl of Wisdom  and brochures were distributed to all attendees.
  • The NGO Soroptimist International organised a meeting to update their members on progress with cervical cancer prevention in Lithuania.
  • The fifth Cervical Cancer Prevention Course was held at Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine and at Kaunas Medical University for healthcare professionals and public health officials.
  • Ten regional meetings on cervical cancer prevention was held for healthcare professionals (paediatricians, general practitioners, gynaecologists) across Lithuania to update their knowledge on cervical cancer prevention.
  • An internet campaign was organised to promote the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition and a banner promoting the petition will be  placed on the Vilnius University website.
  • A promotional event ‘Skiing for Health’ was organised with the City of Vilnius and this attracted over 1,000 participants.
  • A promotional concert is going was held at the St Jones Church.
  • Numerous copies of the ECCA’s brochures were distributed at the various events and lectures held in Lithuania.
  • Extensive media coverage was achieved during Prevention Week in the major national newspapers together with numerous stories that were published on the internet.

Macedonia:

  • November 18, NGO Studiorum  organized the event with Ministry of Health, Medical Faculty and other stakeholders to mark the European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2010 (EAAD 2010) which is organized in all Europe under the patronage of ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) - details are available at: EAAD is a pan-european event, that was organized for the third time this year. Traditionally it is organizing with MoH, Medical Faculty, Institute of Public Health, National Committee on Antibiotic Resistance, etc. This event was one of the ECCPW events in Macedonia.
  • Cervical Cancer Petition was promoted during EAAD 2010.
  • Cervical cancer informational brochures were printed and distributed through health centres and medical clinics across Macedonia.
  • Main websites in Macedonina covered Prevention Week actions.

 Moldova:

  • The Cervical Cancer Prevention Week was organized from 23 to 29 January 2011 by the Oncology Institute of Moldova with support from the Ministry of Health and the UNFPA.
  • The Prevention Week was launched with a media campaign which included the distribution of a press release together with an information package on cervical cancer prevention which resulted in substantial media coverage.
  • A radio talk show was organized with help from the UNFPA on January 27, 2010 when representatives from the Institute of Oncology discussed the importance of cervical cancer prevention and answered the questions from the radio audience.
  • The UNFPA supported the printing of information materials and banners for the public awareness activities that were held in the three national health institutions, and coordinated activities between key persons from the health system. Over 20,000 leaflets about cervical cancer were distributed during the Prevention Week to the Moldovan general public in high-traffic areas by medical students.
  • On February 4th, 2011 group of doctors from the Institute of Oncology organized more awareness raising events, including a cancer prevention conference. Conference participants were informed of the importance of cancer prevention activities and about role of health care workers in the cancer prevention process. During the conference healthcare workers were encouraged to join the campaign and to organize cancer prevention activities to further raise awareness on the subject. The conference also focused attention on another important issue which is the funding of cancer prevention programmes. Currently, cancer prevention is not included in the budgets of medical institutions and not covered by the national health insurance company. Special guests at the conference were the Minister of Health, the Deputy Minister of Health and other officials from the Department of Health.     
  • The doctors from the Institute of Oncology worked with the Chisinau Municipal Health Department to organize training sessions on cervical cancer prevention for high school students from Chisinau. During these sessions, the students had lectures on cervical cancer, received educational brochures and had a chance to ask questions in both the Russian and Romanian languages.

Netherlands:

  • This year, the Dutch Cancer Screening Centre for the Mid-Western Region, the Bevolkingsonderzoek Zuid-West promoted cervical cancer screening among women aged 30-60 years with a special issue of their women's health magazine for women targeting women aged 30+.

Poland:

  • A press conference was held on January 15-20  to announce Prevention Week and promote its objectives with over 200 Polish journalists attending.
  • Cervical cancer petition promotion in Poland. An internet campaign was organised to promote the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition and a banner promoting the petition was placed on the Kwiat Kobiecosci website.
  • The European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week was held in 3 main top locations (shopping centres) in Warsaw.
  • There were volunteers, doctors and nurses involved in all actions, so women had a chance to receive professional consultations and help. famous actors and well know public people agreed to be ambassadors for the week and help to promote the event.
  • Kwiat Kobiecości, launched a free cervical cancer telephone hotline and email information service to answer questions from the general public.  Kwiat Kobiecości also launched a cervical cancer internet forum staffed by medical experts.
  • Cervical cancer informational brochureswere printed and distributed through health centres and medical clinics across Poland.
  • Extensive media coverage about the Prevention Week was achieved including a full-page feature on cervical cancer prevention in the main media resources in Poland.  More than 40 Polish websites covered the Prevention Week actions.

Romania:

  • In Romania the front-stage of the CCPW activities was held by the Health Promotion Departments of the local public health authorities, under the coordination of the National Institute of Public Health which provided them  with / and encouraged the use of ECCA communication materials.
  • All the districts issued press releases and meetings with journalists of the local media, resulting in an impressive coverage of the campaign by written, web-based and audio local and regional media.
  • In addition, the most important national medical information websites dedicated ample spaces to cervical cancer prevention, introducing the Pearl of Wisdom symbol and encouraged visitors to visit ECCA s website and to join the Petition intiative.
  • Member organizations and NGOs also had a variety of initiatives to promote CCPW with members and communities.
  • The Cluj Oncology Institute, together with Romanian Society for Oncological Surgery & Gynaecology,  the Romanian Society for Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology Romanian Society for Cytopathology and the local Health Authority organized a round table with cervical cancer specialists and health media on „ Communication Strategies in Cervical Cancer Prevention”.
  • The Romanian Association for Health Psychology distributed leaflets with information on cervical cancer prevention to women in Cluj, at family doctors clinics and an education session was organized with students in psychology and education sciences at the Babes Bolyai University in Cluj.

Russia:

  • The 4nd Annual Cervical Cancer Prevention Conference was organised in Moscow by the Scientific Centre for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology and the Russian Association for Cervical Pathology and Colposcopy. This conference was attended by physicians including leading specialists in gynaecology, oncology and immunology. During the conference discussions on HPV infection, morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer, screening and prevention of cervical cancer, vaccination against cervical cancer, new diagnostic techniques and treatment of cervical pathology were held.
  • In addition, the program on television about cervical cancer was organized. In Scientific Centre for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology  was held an open day for patients on January 22 when any woman could come to do free colposcopy, PAP-test and Truskrin.

Serbia:

  • Pearl of wisdom pins were given to all media speakers, who were wearing  them during TV presentations and also to all female members of the Parliament.
  • As during previous years, there was high media presence and lectures for women in Belgrade and all over Serbia.  a TV jingle was produced which was emited on Natioanl Tv, several Roll/ups were printed which enabled better communication with media.
  • Medical students were volunteering in all activities. they were educated on how to deliver presentations about prevention to their colleagues from other faculties. 
  • Blitz women, the women’s magazine with highest number of readers devoted the whole issue which will came out in Prevention week to Cervical cancer.
  • Several TVs organized the program and  Prevention Week was promoted in a large shopping center.
  • There was a Media conference with the Minister and President of the Parliament.

Slovenia:

  • The cervical cancer started with press conference on January 20th promoting the fifth Slovenian Cervical Cancer Prevention Week.
  • Number of seminars on HPV vaccination for teenagers and their parents were organised in  high-schools across the Ljubljana and number copies of the ECCA’s Cervical Cancer Screening brochures were printed and distributed to the general public in Slovenia.
  • Medical students organized cervical cancer awarness campaign, One of the students also prepared an article based on ECCA material to get more women aware to use all the prevention measures (screening program, vaccination, HPV testing) already available in the country.

Spain:

  • A press conference was organised in Madrid on January 20 announcing Prevention Week and the activities that had been planned.  A press briefing pack with information about cervical cancer prevention was prepared and distributed.
  • The AECC organised an online promotional campaign for the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition https://www.aecc.es/Nosotros/Nosmovemos/Paginas/Accionesencurso.aspx

UK:

  • The week was successful in terms of raising the profile of the charity, helping to re-enforce the message that we are the lead organisation to come to for comment on issues surrounding cervical cancer.  What was pleasing is that we saw a large jump in web visits compared to Prevention Week 2010. Overall visitor numbers increased by 70.89%, whilst absolute unique increased by 98.71% compared to 2010.
  • New helpline: The Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust helpline (0808 802 8000) was launched during the week. Run by trained volunteers the service will be open Monday – Friday, providing information and support on a range of topics including screening concerns, screening results, cervical abnormalities, cervical cancer, treatments and survivorship.
  • National awareness campaign: “Are you an 80’s Girl?” aims to encourage women to attend screening and vaccination, reminding them that about 80% of girls and women do so each year. 970 posters and 200,000 postcards have been displayed at 220 UK cinemas. The footfall is anticipated to be 4.6 million for the panels 9.2 million for the postcards. See enclosed photography.
  • Survey results announced: Results of a YouGov survey commissioned by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust showed that many women delayed or ignored their screening invitation because it was hard to take time off work, took holiday to attend or felt embarrassed to speak to their employer. They also said they couldn’t book an appointment because their surgery didn’t offer flexible times, e.g. evenings or weekends.  The results are a concern and the charity will be looking to work with employees and GPs to reduce these perceived inequalities.
  • Early Day Motion: As a result of the YouGov research mentioned above, an Early Day Motion (EDM 1326) was tabled during Prevention Week.  The EDM calls on the government to ensure that everything possible should be done to enable women to attend screening and vaccination when offered the opportunity including encouraging companies to allow employees to attend screening during working hours and for GP surgeries to provide flexible opportunities for women to be screened.
  • Fight Cervical Cancer in Style (FCCS): A media radio day was organised to promote the 1st anniversary of the Fight Cervical Cancer in Style Campaign.  The campaign is funded by GlaxoSmithKline in association with Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and during the week results of a survey were announced showing that awareness of cervical cancer was still low and that 36% of survey responders had ignored screening invitations.  Robert Music Director of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, Amelle from the Sugababes and Anne Szarewski from the Wolfson Institute for Preventative Medicine were interviewed by a range of radio stations, whilst the campaign also featured in a number of women’s magazines.   • Raising awareness in the community: A wide range of actions were organised by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust supporters with information booths and displays being set-up in hospitals, GP clinics, and company offices across the UK with thousands of information materials distributed.

Ukraine:

  • In the Ukraine, Cervical Cancer Prevention Week was promoted by the LISSOD Hospital, one of the ECCA’s Ukrainian members, they dedicated their January newsletter to Prevention Week and to the STOP Cervical Cancer Petition.
  • Educational workshops on HPV vaccination for teenagers and their parents were organised in  high-schools across  the Kiev and number copies of the ECCA’s Cervical Cancer Screening brochures were printed and distributed to the general public in Kiev.
