How to Set the Right Expectations for Children

Setting high expectations has sparked a debate among parents. Some think that high expectations can cause detrimental effects to children. However, one study in Harvard shows better performance results from higher expectations in school. Children can also strive in sports or any activity that show progression.  There are ways to set high but right expectations for kids.

Make clear expectations

Children need to know what exactly their parents’ hope for them. For instance, a young girl thought her parents wanted her to be a lawyer. She believed that she caused disappointment to them when she chose another field. However, her parents just really wanted her to be in her field of interest. This shows that straightforward communication between parents and children is important.

Plan long-term goals, but concentrate on short term goals

It will be useless to plan long-term goals like university education if short-term goals are ignored. Talking about future plans on a daily basis and focusing on short-term objectives like getting a good score from a math quiz are the ways to go for parents.

Acknowledge achievements

When a simple victory is attained, celebrating it is essential. If you want your son to be a basketball player, recognize his success when he shoots a 3 pointer. This can give children the motivation to improve themselves further.

Learn how to handle setbacks

Parents should always set a good example to their children. How you handle difficulties in life will most likely be imitated by them. Showing them that these setbacks can be handled can make them go through the critical moments of their life.

Learn to adjust

There are times that our expectation becomes unreachable. You have to be willing to change it into something that is achievable. If you continued to hold on to it, it might give much disappointment, sadness, and pressure to your child.

Parents are the best support for their children. In every developmental stage, parents need to be on their children’s side. The expectations set should be a two-way street. This way, both the parents and the children can be happy.
